Susanna’s marriage is severely tested by the rumour of her adultery.
Doctor John Hall reminisces about his past life, particularly his relationship with his wife, Susanna, the elder of William Shakespeare’s daughters. Many episodes from his past, some happy, others less so, are brought to light. But how far was he prepared to go to prevent his wife being branded an adulteress and his practice threatened? Meanwhile, Susanna gives her version of their marriage, letting us into the secrets of her own relationships with her family, her lovers and with her revered father and the tenderness of his final moments.

A Family Scandal by Reg Mitchell
The Quineys have been married for sixteen years. The business had not recovered from its earlier recession and Thomas is at his wit’s end. Meantime, Judith has a confrontation with her elder sister, Susanna, wife of Dr John Hall. According to their father’s will, Judith’s sons shall inherit the Shakespeare estates, since Susanna’s daughter has not produced any children. Susanna, however, does not accept the proposition.
Seven years later, both Judith’s sons have died from the fever. She and Thomas blame themselves, and each other for the continued depression in their business. Each of them has a secret from the past they are not prepared to share. Was it fever that took their children, or the hand of the devil?
