Princess Sam is a girl of our time, with a mind of her own, certainly not prepared to submit to the matrimonial plans laid for her by her parents, the reigning monarchs of Merryvale, King Kevin and Queen Julie. She copes with their plans in her own inimitable way and counters the machinations of the hard-line Prime Minister, Madeleine Newcombe and her corrupt ‘spin man’ Paul Beethovan, who are working to sweep away the monarchy and declare Merryvale a republic ... with a president already elected! All fathers of daughters will identify with King Kevin as he sings his lament to ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’. And Princess Sam’s poignant little song ‘Second Best Princess’, which she sings to her late sister Paula, ‘the one groomed for stardom’, will bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened theatre-goer.
