Volume I : Two monologues used as the basis for the play, ‘Hallmarks’.
John Hall’s Observations :
In May 1632, Shakespeare’s son-in-law, Doctor John Hall, ruminates on his work, his patients and his marriage to Susanna; he recalls how he responded to the accusation that his wife had committed adultery, though he could never be sure of the truth.
Susanna’s Secret :
On that same day, Susanna returned from the funeral of an old friend. Memories return about her childhood, some happy, others not so; her less than perfect marriage to Dr Hall, the birth of her daughter and the rumour of her adultery with childhood sweetheart, Rafe Smith. Her secret affair of the heart - her father’s death.
