When Emma’s governess, Miss Taylor, marries Mr Weston, Emma is left alone with her hypochondriac father. She amuses herself by arranging the life of the illegitimate Harriet Smith, trying to match her with the young clergyman, Mr Elton, who himself fancies Emma. Their neighbour, George Knightley’s younger brother is married to Emma’s sister, Isabella, whilst Emma regards George as her personal property. Relationships are complicated, but when Harriet shows interest in George, Emma becomes jealous, leaving Harriet free to make her own choice - local farmer, Robert Martin. And they all live happily ever after!
